She began painting in 1925 while recovering from a near-fatal bus accident that left her with lifelong injuries. She was relatively unknown until her work was discovered in 1970. She became an icon for Chicanos and the feminist movement, her work is internationally recognized for honoring Mexican national and Indigenous traditions and for its powerful depiction of the female experience."
